Day 1 of Isla November - even though I grew up an ocean away and with a very different accent, the texture of that time is very real to me now. I'm luxuriating in the nostalgia and the confusion of being a preadolescent (not really tho' - by 1986 I was already a college student, but I can time-project back a few years). On with the voyage!

It's so heartbreaking that the poor boy knows he will be moving by listening to the cadence of his mother's voice as she argues with the latest "fella." Wonderful, sad story.

Absolutely brilliant writing. The descriptions of Kathryn, and George's idea of what a bedroom should be - so real, so good.

Wow, Mr. Curtis! That opening line was an absolute killer. Other stand-outs: "That Kathryn was still in there somewhere, but she'd gotten quieter with every move, every goodbye." "Kathryn, the relationship assassin, always knew when to pull out the knife—and more importantly, where to put it." This woman is a mess. And it has messed with her boy. I wonder who he will turn into?

Thanks Sharron. She’s become quite the piece of work.

This was deeply nostalgic for me. From retreating into sound waves (often the very songs you've listed here), right down to the constant moving from town to town, it all transported me to a very specific time in my life. Really enjoying this so far, J! Looking forward to reading the rest!

Glad it hit the right nerve. Definitely more to come.
