Smells are as powerful as a song in bringing back feelings. I used to live in Bakersfield, California, when I went to high school. There is a town a few miles away named Oildale. The scent of an oilfield is unmistakable, and passing through brings me back to thoughts of high school days with "Fortunate Son" playing in the background.

Coincidentally I've been thinking a lot about your section on olfactory travels recently. There are a few that take me back to moments in time (a specific paint smell, for example, will immediately transfer me to high school). It's been so on my mind that I've brought it into a short story I have been working on this week. I'll have to mention this post in the intro I think!
